In honor of International Translation Day, here are a few things about the profession we all know and love that you’re unlikely to be familiar with.

Every year on September 30, the world celebrates International Translation Day to honor the special people who make proper intercultural communication possible. Why September 30? It just so happens to coincide with the Feast of St. Jerome, who was one of the first translators to translate the Bible into Latin. In the interest of celebrating translators and the work they do, we’ve compiled some interesting facts about the translation profession that we hope you didn’t already hear last year on International Translation Day.

  1. According to the Translators Association of China, there are 330,000 professional translators on the planet, with roughly 25% of those working as freelancers.
  2. A translator working full time can be estimated to translate roughly 520,000 words per year.
  3. An estimated 45% of the world’s translation community lives in the United States.
